SINGAPORE - (AP) - The U. S. Food and Drug Administration on Thursday rejected a second letter from a company seeking to stop selling prescription drugs that contain the drug sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra.
In a letter to the FDA, the company said that the agency is unable to determine whether it may have improperly marketed a drug.
The agency said that a drug manufacturer's marketing plan should include a drug that should only be sold as an add-on treatment for erectile dysfunction or impotence. The drug must be sold under the name "Sildenafil" or similar name in the U. and the generic is available in the form of capsules or tablets.
The company is also asking the FDA to require the drug to be labeled "Generic Viagra" or similar to the company's "Sildenafil," a prescription drug that's marketed for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
It has not responded to requests for comment.
"The FDA's decision to allow a generic, not a brand name, of the active ingredient Sildenafil does not reflect the company's position that it is an acceptable alternative to the brand name," the FDA said in a statement. "We will continue to vigorously defend our position on the issue to ensure that the public and patients are aware of this product and the safety and effectiveness of sildenafil in treating erectile dysfunction."
A letter from the company's president, Dr. John H. Goodfellow, the FDA's Commissioner for Regulatory Affairs, said that a similar letter from the company's office was also submitted but that the FDA has not given approval for the company's request to continue selling the product.
The company did not respond to requests for comment.
The drug maker, Pfizer Inc., has sold Viagra since 1998. Viagra is the brand name of sildenafil, the drug that is also the active ingredient in Cialis. Cialis is also sold under the brand name Levitra, and is available for purchase as a generic, including the brand name of Levitra, in the United States.FDA does not require a drug manufacturer to list a product on its website, and FDA policy notes that some drugs on the list are not approved by the FDA. Drugs sold on the FDA list are listed alphabetically in red, green, or blue letters.FDA said that it is taking a different approach in an effort to reduce sales of prescription medicines. It said that some prescription drugs are sold under brand names that have the same active ingredient. It said that the company is not seeking approval for the generic version of the drug.
The agency said that it will consider the company's request for approval to continue selling the generic version of the drug until it has determined that it meets the FDA's requirements.
Pfizer Inc. has said that the company's request is not intended to increase sales of the drug.
The FDA said that the company has been seeking approval for its request to sell the generic version of the drug, a version of Viagra marketed for erectile dysfunction. It will contact the FDA on Wednesday if the company determines that the drug is not a suitable alternative to its brand name and that the FDA is not interested in the product.
